EPE launches the Technical Note "Demand Response: Concepts, Regulatory Aspects and Energy Planning

In an effort to consider every resource available to the Brazilian Power System, EPE launches the Technical Note "Demand Response: Concepts, Regulatory Aspects and Energy Planning". Demand response brings to power consumers greater control, knowledge and management over their energy consumption in response to supply conditions, no longer having a secondary role in this market and starting to have an active participation in the future of the energy system.

In addition to a quick conceptualization of demand response and the programs already carried out in Brazil, the note presents some of the main international demand response programs, with a focus on the products offered. It also presents aspects about how to consider demand response into medium and long term system expansion planning.

Brazil is at a moment of power sector modernization, with an ongoing debate about reforming its regulatory framework and actions on several other fronts. Therefore, the Technical Note and its references are important inputs to assist these discussions, especially in the "Work Group for Modernization of the Electricity Sector", constituted with the purpose of improving proposals that enable the modernization of the power sector, based on the pillars of governance, legal stability and dialogue with the society
