Financing the energy transition is fundamental for climate neutrality and achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. In Brazil, the Energy Research Office (EPE) is leading the pioneering initiative to map public and publicly-supported financing for the energy transition in a single database that compiles data from 2015 to 2024.
EPE's report "Financing for the Energy Transition" reveals that approximately R$ 500 billion was invested in financing the energy transition among the institutions analyzed from 2015 to 2024. Looking at renewables, the developed database indicates a growth of 33% per year during the period.
Report's highlights
Public financing grew and was fundamental in guiding not only public but also private investments in generation, distribution, and transmission during the energy transition.
The main actors in financing the transition between 2015 and 2024 were the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and incentivized debentures, which together accounted for 82% of the mapped financing.
EPE experts have identified that the public sector and energy planning have the potential to leverage investments for the energy transition.
The mapping shows an opportunity for diversification, since investments in the last decade have been concentrated in two major categories: renewable energies (which focus on mature technologies such as solar and wind) and transmission, distribution and storage.
The new EPE Financing booklet provides a variety of strategic data for the energy transition.
